Salmonberry
Rubus spectabilis
Rose family
Salmonberries are one of the earliest berries to ripen in May and June and are found in shady areas in wet forests.
Salmonberries have provided sustenance for Indigenous communities across the Pacific Northwest for countless generations. The young stem sprouts can be peeled and eaten raw or steamed. They are sweet and juicy, making them a favourite food of children. The berries are sweet, soft and sometimes quite mushy.
