Henderson’s Shooting Star
Henderson’s Shooting Star / Broad-leaved Shooting Star
Dodecatheon hendersonii or Primula hendersonii
Primrose family
This perennial is only found on southeast Vancouver Island (in BC). It also grows along the coast from Washington to California.
This native plant grows in meadows, open woods, forest edges and often in rocky and warm areas.
Henderson’s Shooting Star is an early spring bloomer that has umbels of 3-25 nodding pink, lavender or white flowers. Each flower has 4-5 long petals swept back from the centre, like an inside out umbrella.
Bumble bees really like it and are an important pollinator for the plant.
